The meaning behind Women’s Day

South African legislation required women to carry passes, and this sparked on of the country’s largest protest demonstrations. On 9 August 1956, 20 000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to present a petition against the pass laws.

This public message was received by prime minister J.G Strijdom through a petition with over 100 000 signatures that was left at his door. The day was declared a public holiday in 1995, commemorating women in prominent positions.
